Abstract:
The Philippines are hit by on average ten typhoons per year, potentially causing considerable damages. One aspect of the Filipino economy that is particularly vulnerable to these extreme weather events is the rice market, which provides the staple food of much of the population. However, despite active government ex-ante and ex-post mitigation policies for these storms, there is no quantitative estimate of the actual impact of these storms on the rice market. In this paper we use satellite derived information and typhoon tracks to create a potential destruction index that allows us to directly quantify the impact of the storms on rice production. Our results show that the implications can be substantial.
