Abstract : Assuming that local labor markets are non-overlapping is a common practice in both theoretical and empirical works. We use a unique dataset from one of the main online job boards in the US where job seekers, vacancies, as well as applications from job seekers to vacancies are all individually observed. Using these data, we document that labor markets are in fact largely overlapping, in both geographical and occupational dimensions. We incorporate this feature of the labor market in a new measure of mismatch unemployment. We show that mismatch unemployment is substantially affected by taking into account the fuzziness of labor markets. In particular, with our new measure of mismatch unemployment, we find that geographical mismatch may account for as much as 10% of unemployment.
