Abstract: Several studies have highlighted the role of reputation-based feedback mechanisms in the success of electronic marketplaces. The objective of this paper is to disentangle the reputation role of feedback mechanisms and their emotional reward/sanction role. We use an experimental approach based on the standard trust game (Berg et al., 1995). We add a feedback stage after the trust game and compare a treatment in which feedbacks are publicly observed with a treatment in which ratings are private information. Our findings indicate that both private and public ratings improve cooperation significantly. However private feedback mechanisms are less effective to stimulate trust and trustworthiness than public feedback mechanism. The reason is not that private and public feedbacks have a different influence on individuals’ behavior, but they  tend to receive fewer feedbacks from their partners when feedbacks are private information. These findings suggest that publicly observed feedback is crucial to induce honest behaviors on markets characterized by information asymmetry.
